Shishu Kit

Shishu Kit Project

Launched in 2018 by the Lalitbhai Patel Foundation in partnership with United Way of Baroda, the Shishu Kit Project is a flagship maternal and child healthcare initiative dedicated to ensuring that every mother and newborn, irrespective of their socio-economic background, receives a healthy and dignified start to life. The project was conceived to address the immediate needs of underprivileged mothers during childbirth by providing essential newborn care materials while simultaneously promoting safe motherhood, neonatal health, and informed parenting practices. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 – Good Health and Well-being, the initiative seeks to reduce maternal and infant health risks by strengthening postnatal care and encouraging healthier practices during the crucial period following childbirth. Since its inception, the project has distributed more than 45,000 Shishu Kits to mothers delivering in government hospitals, easing the financial burden on vulnerable families and ensuring that newborns receive the basic necessities required during their first days of life.

Each Shishu Kit has been thoughtfully designed to address the immediate healthcare and hygiene needs of both mother and child. Every kit contains 15 carefully selected essential items, including a durable carry bag, sanitary napkins, a mother gown, two sets of baby clothes, nappies, caps, mittens, a baby wrap towel, a plastic mattress, and a baby care awareness leaflet containing important guidance on newborn health and hygiene. These essential supplies provide practical support during the postnatal period while encouraging safe childcare practices, improved hygiene, and better maternal health. The kits are distributed through District Hospitals across Vadodara, ensuring that economically disadvantaged families receive these vital resources at the time when they are needed most, reducing stress and enabling mothers to focus on the health and well-being of their newborns.

Beyond the distribution of newborn kits, the Shishu Kit Project adopts a holistic approach towards maternal and child healthcare by integrating awareness, education, and behavioural change interventions into its implementation. At Jamnabai General Hospital and Sir Sayajirao (SSG) Hospital, structured educational sessions are conducted for expectant and new mothers on critical topics such as maternal nutrition, family planning, breastfeeding, newborn care, mental health, postpartum recovery, immunisation, and child development. The programme also incorporates specialised postpartum physical exercise sessions led by qualified physiotherapists to support mothers in their recovery after childbirth. Interactive learning methods, including live demonstrations, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials, visual posters, and practical models, encourage active participation and provide mothers with an opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, and receive guidance from healthcare professionals. These comprehensive interventions not only improve awareness and promote healthy behaviours but also contribute significantly to reducing maternal and neonatal health risks, ultimately creating healthier families and stronger communities.

Over the years, the Shishu Kit Project has evolved into one of United Way of Baroda’s most impactful healthcare initiatives, extending far beyond the provision of essential supplies. By combining immediate material support with health education, counselling, and capacity building, the project empowers mothers with the knowledge, confidence, and resources required to provide a safe and nurturing environment for their children. Through sustained partnerships with hospitals, healthcare professionals, and philanthropic organisations, United Way of Baroda continues to strengthen maternal and child healthcare systems, ensuring that every mother experiences childbirth with dignity and every newborn receives the best possible start in life. The enduring success of the initiative reflects the organisation’s unwavering commitment to creating healthier communities where no mother or child is left behind.

Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) Sessions

An integral component of the Shishu Kit Project is its Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) Sessions, which focus on empowering expectant and new mothers with the knowledge and confidence required to adopt healthy practices for themselves and their newborns. While the distribution of Shishu Kits addresses immediate material needs, these educational sessions ensure that mothers are equipped with essential information to make informed decisions regarding maternal and child health. Over the past seven years, the project has successfully conducted 241 Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) sessions, including 48 sessions at Sir Sayajirao (SSG) Hospital and Jamnabai General Hospital. Conducted through interactive group discussions and one-on-one counselling, the sessions encourage active participation, enabling mothers to ask questions, share experiences, and receive guidance from healthcare professionals. The curriculum covers a broad range of topics including balanced nutrition and healthy meal planning, maternal self-care, mental health and emotional well-being, post-delivery care, the importance of administering the first breast milk (colostrum), correct breastfeeding techniques, immunisation schedules, family planning methods, newborn care, hygiene practices, and the importance of physical activity after childbirth. By promoting positive behavioural changes and increasing awareness, these sessions play a vital role in improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes while encouraging healthier families and communities.

Postpartum Physical Exercise Sessions

Recognising that a mother’s recovery after childbirth is as important as the care provided to her newborn, the Shishu Kit Project has incorporated Postpartum Physical Exercise Sessions as an essential component of its maternal healthcare interventions. Conducted under the guidance of qualified physiotherapists, these sessions are designed to help new mothers regain physical strength, improve mobility, reduce post-delivery discomfort, and minimise common postpartum complications through safe and guided exercises. Using live demonstrations, practical exercise routines, and personalised guidance, mothers learn techniques that support muscle recovery, improve posture, strengthen the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, enhance circulation, and promote overall physical and mental well-being. The sessions also educate participants on the importance of gradual physical activity, proper body mechanics, and long-term health after childbirth. By integrating physiotherapy with maternal health education, the project ensures that mothers receive comprehensive postnatal care, enabling them to recover faster, care for their newborns more effectively, and embrace motherhood with greater confidence and well-being.

Stories of Care and Courage

Eena Abbas

At just 19 years of age, Eena Abbas from Gotda Village, Savli, embarked on one of the most significant journeys of her life as she welcomed her newborn at Jamnabai General Hospital on 8th November 2024. Living in a joint family that relies on a modest income earned through daily labour, the family faced considerable financial challenges in preparing for the arrival of the baby. During this crucial time, receiving a Shishu Kit from United Way of Baroda proved to be a source of immense relief. The kit, containing essential newborn and maternal care items, helped ease the family’s immediate financial burden and ensured that both mother and child had the basic necessities required during the early days after childbirth. Beyond the material support, the gesture offered reassurance, dignity, and hope during a vulnerable period. Deeply touched by the initiative, Eena expressed her heartfelt gratitude, sharing that the timely assistance made her transition into motherhood more comfortable and gave her family the confidence to care for their newborn without added financial stress.

Puja Sanjay Nayak

For Puja Sanjay Nayak, a 20-year-old resident of Ajod Village, the arrival of her daughter came earlier than expected, leaving the family emotionally and financially unprepared for childbirth. She delivered her baby at Sir Sayajirao (SSG) Hospital on 19th July 2024, and in those critical moments, the Shishu Kit provided through United Way of Baroda became an invaluable source of support. Equipped with essential items for both mother and newborn, the kit ensured that the family had immediate access to basic healthcare and hygiene necessities, allowing them to focus on the well-being of the baby rather than worrying about additional expenses. The timely intervention not only reduced the family’s financial burden but also brought comfort and reassurance during an unexpected situation. Grateful for the compassionate support, Puja and her family acknowledged that the initiative made a meaningful difference at a time when they needed it the most, reflecting the profound impact that timely healthcare assistance can have on vulnerable families.

Voice of Gratitude

“At Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad, we are grateful to United Way of Baroda for their valuable support through the Shishu Kit Initiative. These kits have provided essential care to new mothers and babies, particularly in remote and tribal areas where access to basic resources is often limited. Beyond meeting immediate postnatal needs, the initiative has encouraged more institutional deliveries, contributing to safer childbirth, improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes, and greater trust in public healthcare services. Between 2024 and 2025, a total of 1,312 Shishu Kits were distributed through our hospital, benefiting hundreds of families. We deeply appreciate this impactful initiative and sincerely thank United Way of Baroda for its continued commitment to strengthening maternal and child healthcare.”
